Ally Senior Insurance Risk Analyst in Detroit, Michigan

Position Description

Ally Financial Inc.'s Independent Risk Management function is responsible for objective and critical assessment of risks and--through oversite, effective challenge, and other means--evaluation of whether Ally remains aligned with its risk appetite and risk limits. In this role, the Senior Risk Analyst / Risk Analyst will be responsible for implementation and execution of Independent Risk Management processes and procedures related to Insurance/Underwriting risk associated with Ally's Insurance Business Line. The successful candidate will support Enterprise Risk Management Policy process requirements related to risk identification, measurement reporting.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain strong working relationships with Business Line process owners and subject matter experts

  • Develop a deep understanding of Business Line processes related to insurance/underwriting risk management, focused on Ally Insurance's Property and Casualty (P&C) and Finance and Insurance (F&I) product segments

  • Support annual revision of Enterprise Insurance Risk Policy, and any related standards, procedures, or committee charters, including assessment of related business line risk policies

  • Collaborate with Business Line and IRM partners to ensure appropriate and credible review, oversight and challenge with respect to identification and assessment of insurance/underwriting risks, including assumptions related to the following areas:

  • Rate proposals and revisions for Ally's product offerings in both P&C and F&I

  • Loss reserve and unearned premium reserve indications

  • Financial structures and profitability estimates

  • Reinsurance placements

  • Support development of insurance risk reporting and analytics and ongoing refinement of same

  • Identify and recommend risk limits that are consistent with Ally's stated Insurance/Underwriting Risk Appetite

  • Escalate and report insurance risk concerns as necessary


  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Insurance related designation (CPCU, ARM, etc.) and/or actuarial experience preferred but not required; support will be provided for candidates looking to progress in CAS/SOA designations

  • 1-3 years of risk management related experience, preferably in insurance related processes

  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to effectively synthesize and communicate ideas and insights across the organization, including with executive leadership; strong presentation skills a plus

  • Ability to multi-task and comfort adapting to a changing and developing environment

  • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel and Business Intelligence tools (Power Pivot, Power BI) preferred

  • Data analytics experience and background preferred (SAS / SQL)
